Some ink jet cartridges are compatible with toner refill kits, enabling them to be reused over and over again, prolonging the cartridges’ lifespan. Reach out to any ink jet cartridge brands to see if they sell a toner refill kit!

If you have ink jet cartridges that aren’t the correct type for your printer or no longer needed, please bring it to any of our hazardous waste disposal sites (see the Hazardous Waste tab), so that other residents can give it second-chance at use through our SafeChem Swap Shop.

The link can provide you with more details about our SafeChem Swap Shop program including location address, hours of service, and how you can browse the shop and save on supply cost on your next project.

Ink jet cartridges are not made out of compostable materials.

Ink jet cartridges should not go in your curbside single-stream recycling cart as it puts recycling trucks and the Recycling Center at increased risk to chemical exposure.

Special collection recycling does not apply to ink jet cartridges.

Ink jet cartridges need to be disposed of through any of our five SafeChem-Household Hazardous Waste Disposal sites during designated service hours.

The link can provide you with the details of this FREE program! No commercial waste from businesses, schools, non-profits, etc. — strictly residential hazardous waste.

Because ink jet cartridges contain hazardous materials, they are prohibited by the State of Michigan and Environmental Protection Agency from going into the landfill or waste to energy facility. This type of material should not go in your curbside trash cart as it puts trash trucks and our trash disposal sites at increased risk of chemical exposure.
