Some places (EX: nature centers, farms, zoos, etc.) request live Christmas trees, wreaths and garland as enrichment for animals or wildlife so reaching out to a few of those places to see if they are accepting trees could be an option.

If your man-made Christmas tree is still in great shape and you just don’t have a use for it anymore, consider donating or repurposing it! Facebook Marketplace, Freecycle, Craigslist, or your local BuyNothing Project group are all great places to give away items.

Check out some of the Community Disposal Outlets below for any places that accept donations.

Live Christmas Trees can be composted through your local township or city yard waste or “tree-cycling” program. All ornaments, string lights, tinsel, ribbon, string, and non-compostable materials MUST BE REMOVED prior to program participation. Check out some of the Community Disposal Outlets below for where you should dispose of your live Christmas Tree.

Manufactured Christmas trees cannot be composted due to the prescence of plastic, metal, and other non-compostable materials.

Christmas trees, wreaths, and garland of any type SHOULD NEVER go in your curbside recycling cart or in our recycling drop-off stations.

Due to their bulky nature, Christmas trees can clog sorting machines and prevent recyclables from getting sorted and recycled at all. Additionally, Christmas trees are made of multiple materials (plastics, metal, glass lights, etc.) that makes them unable to be recycled.

While many places advertise that they “recycle” manufactured Christmas trees, what most of them really mean is reuse or repurpose through donation or resale. But the “R” of reuse is better than recycling so be sure to grab any unwanted manufactured Christmas trees and give it to your favorite donation place.

Check out some of the Community Disposal Outlets below for any places that accept donations or recycling.

Hazardous waste disposal does not apply to Christmas trees, wreaths, and garland.

Live Christmas trees, garland, and wreaths, also considered yard waste, are PROHIBITED by the State of MI from being landfilled or placed in your curbside trash cart.

Keeping manufactured Christmas trees out of the landfill, when possible, and in reuse ensures we give those valuable resources a second chance at life and use! However, if you cannot donate or repurpose your man-made Christmas tree, this type of waste is acceptable in your trash or can be landfilled at Kent County Department of Public Work’s two residential trash drop-offs for a fee:

North Kent Waste & Recycling Center in Rockford
South Kent Waste & Recycling Center in Byron Center
