How can Kent County Department of Public Works help?

Explore the waste stream options below for how you can reuse, recycle, compost, or dispose of the item you are trying to get rid of through a KCDPW facility or service.

Donate or Reuse
Special Collection Recycling
Proper Disposal

If your old vehicle, car, truck, trailer, boat, jet-ski, motorcycle, RV, etc. is still in great shape, and you just don’t have a use for it anymore, consider donating or selling it! Facebook Marketplace, Freecycle, Craigslist, or your local BuyNothing Project group are all great places to give away items or post them for sale. You can also browse any Community Disposal Outlets listed below to see if they accept donations.

Composting does not apply to cars, vehicles, campers, boats, etc.

Cars, car parts, and other vehicle accessories CANNOT be recycled through your curbside recycling cart or our recycling drop-off stations.

Due to their heavy, bulky, and sometimes sharp nature, car parts and other scrap metal items can potentially cause harm by landing on a staff member’s hand while sorting or jam up sorting machines (especially the magnet) preventing recyclables from getting recycled at all. Metal car parts can be scrap metal recycled (see Special Collection Recycling tab).

Due to how most cars and other motorized vehicles are made (with multiple materials), they need to be recycled in a unique way. Check out some of the Community Disposal Outlets below for any places that recycle whole cars and vehicles.

If you are preparing a camper or RV, other vehicle for landfill disposal and it contains an appliance, like a mini-fridge, it will need to be removed and recycled separately from the RV or vehicle.

If you have a metal car part that you are looking to recycle, we offer two FREE scrap metal recycling drop-offs at Kent County Department of Public Work’s two residential trash drop-offs:

The links above can provide the location address and hours of service.

All cars, campers, RVs, quads, jet-skis, motorcycles, etc. must be drained of any gasoline, antifreeze, or motor oil prior to landfill disposal.

Automotive fluids are accepted through any of our five SafeChem-Household Hazardous Waste Disposal sites during designated service hours.

No commercial hazardous waste from businesses, schools, non-profits, etc. — strictly residential hazardous waste. See the Community Disposal Outlets below for commercial hazardous waste solutions.

Keeping cars and other motorized vehicles, out of the landfill, when possible, and recycled or back into reuse ensures we give those valuable resources a second chance at life and use!

However, if your vehicle cannot be recycled or donated or repurposed, this type of waste could be landfilled at Kent County Department of Public Work’s landfill trash drop-offs for a fee:

The links above can provide the location address, disposal fee, and hours of service. Please reference the Proper Disposal and Special Collection Recycling tabs on how to prepare your vehicle for landfill disposal.
